Congress shouldn’t force statehood on Puerto Rico

With Congress preparing to return to work in a few weeks, a controversial debate about the future of Puerto Rico is brewing in Washington. After 50 years of Puerto Ricans supporting a continuation of the existing Commonwealth relationship and rejecting statehood, the pro-statehood movement is promoting a referendum that would generate its desired outcome, regardless of whether Puerto Ricans support it. Several members of the Pennsylvania delegation are part of this effort, perhaps unknowingly, and I encourage them to reconsider their support. More…
