The body of Paratrooper Cpl. Jason Nuñez 22 years old, of Naranjito, Puerto Rico will be laid to rest tomorrow. He is the 58th Puerto Rican to lose his life in the war in Iraq. There was much live news coverage on local TV channels but something that was omitted from the newspaper coverage was the fact that the mother of Jason Nuñez removed the American flag from the coffin of her son and threw it on the floor. She then picked up a small hand-held Puerto Rican flag and said,” this is the flag I want on my son’s coffin”. This was seen on the live coverage but no mention of it was made in any newspaper that I saw.
Marlene Fernändez pleaded to parents in general not to let their children sign up with the military. She said that, “ there is no future in the military, only death”.
Cpl. Jason Nuñez was a member of the 82 Airborne out of Fort Bragg, South Carolina. He along with three other soldiers were killed in a suicide attack on their convoy in Baqubah, Iraq. Cpl. Nuñez’s funeral was a closed coffin ceremony which was an indication of the massive injuries received. He will be buried tomorrow.
