TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS — This Central American country holds a presidential election Sunday in a bid to regain international legitimacy after a coup that has rattled the hemisphere and frustrated the Obama administration’s efforts to improve relations with Latin America.

The true divides in Latin America — between justice and injustice, democracy and dictatorship, human rights and corporate rights, people’s power and imperial domination — have never been more visible than today.  People’s movements throughout the region to revolutionize corrupt, unequal systems that have isolated and excluded the vast majority in Latin American nations are successfully taking power democratically and building new models of economic and social justice.  Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Ecuador are the vanguard of these movements, with other nations such as Uruguay and Argentina moving at a slower pace towards change.

La policía hondureña reprimió en San Pedro Sula a cientos de personas que se manifestaban pacíficamente contra elecciones convocadas por el gobierno de facto. Miembros de la resistencia al gople de Estado informaron que la protesta era en paz, sentados y acostados s obre la calle, cantando, como tambmién algunos disidentes del gobierno de facto encabezado por Roberto Micheletti fueron amenanzados en sus domicilios. Más de 68 arrestos se produjeron este jueves luego de una fuerte represión, realizada sin razón alguna, por cuerpos policiales y militares en contra de unos 5 mil simpatizantes del presidente Manuel Zelaya que se encontraban frente al Parque Central de San Pedro Sula, adyacente a la alcaldía de esa ciudad industrial, la segunda más importante del país.
